As a kid, I took it as a sci-fi epic, the likes of which television had never seen. As an adult, I took it as one of the cheesiest things ever broadcast. I mean, come on, look at how this promo shot for the original series and tell me this isn't classic 80s camp:
It looks more "Full House" than alien invasion.
Despite its horrible dialog and low-grade visual effects, the original mini-series will always have a place in my heart. So it was with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation that I viewed the first 8 minutes of next month's remake. Check it for yourself here if you haven't already:
What I like:
Elizabeth Mitchell. She's hot.
Morena Baccarin. She's hot.
What I don't like:
The kid. Seriously, he's the Anna Lucia of the show already. I hope he's eaten early on.
It worries me that after the initial episodes airing next week, there's a loooong wait for the follow-up. ABC is claiming that the gap is due to the Olympics. Insiders are claiming that the entire series needed a re-write. While that's a horrible way to kick-off a flagship show, I guess it's better than following up the new mini-series with a giant let-down. My fingers are crossed.
I'll leave you with a question re: the original version...can Beastmaster's pants get any tighter?
(It's rhetorical. The answer is obviously "no".)
SyFy is showing the original two miniseries on Sunday night.
