Blinded by the light…or is that the shine from his forehead? Presenting…
BALDSDAY!
Hey peeps! Welcome to Baldsday! Here we celebrate all things Vs. and talk about how we can make the game we all love so much even better.
First, a couple of notes that are worth mentioning. One, while we did look over these decks and read over the instructions, we do not consider ourselves an expert in the use of these decks. We attempted to prepare ourselves the best we could, but there were definitely instances where our inexperience with the decks lead to confusion over what to do in tough situations. In those situations, we did our best to make the best decision possible. Sometimes we were right, and other times we were dead wrong. The thing that is important to remember is that we attempted to win each match and played to the best of our ability.
And now, without further adieu, I bring you the results from the first two matches of the EA Challenge.
Match 1 and 2…..FIGHT!
Turn 1
I pulled Boris, Dr. Doom, Time Thief, Hawkeye mulligan (did not have black cat)
Draw Black Cat, Blade, Blade, Forbidden Loyalties, Null Time Zone, EOME
Newfred Brothersworth: (henceforth know as Dwarf since he played the deck)
Recruits GPCD officer, attacking for 1 to the face.
EA Stall:
Place Null Time Zone
No recruit
50-49
Turn 2
EA Stall
Draw Blade and Pleasant Distractions
Place Forbidden Loyalties
Recruit Black Cat
Dwarf recruits Alfred.
Black cat into Alfred, GPCD reinforces, Alfred stun for 1. Black cat stuns, discarding to draw. (I forgot what I discarded and what I drew…bad note taking skills.)
49-47
Turn 3
Draw Apocalypse, White Tiger
Dwarf:
uses Alfred to fetch The Hook-Up. recruits Joanna Cargill.
EA Stall:
recruit Blade. Set up Blade in front of Black Cat.
Dwarf Team attack with 2x GPCD. Power up blade. Power up GPCD. GPCD stun and Blade stun. Joanna attacks into Black Cat. Evade. Discards Pleasant distraction to draw EOME for Black Cat effect. Take 6 for Joanna Cargill direct.
48-37
Turn 4
Draw Have a Blast, Time Thief.
Use EOME discarding White Tiger to search for Hawkeye. Recruit.
[Dwarf Note: He laughed evilly when he did this!]
EA Stall:
Hawkeye stuns two GPCD, Black Cat stuns Alfred, Blade stuns GPCD. HAB the Hook-Up to prevent Blade from Stunning. (Dwarf had New Brotherhood face up, and getting rid of the team up got rid of the attack bonus for the GPCD officer.)
Dwarf:
Joanna into Black Cat taking 6.
41-31
Turn 5
Draw Daredevil and Spider Man
Set Time thief and recruit Victor Von Doom. Use Hawkeye on two GPCD officers.
Forbidden loyalties to team up Spider-Friends and DOOM, discarding Spider Man to add +1 counter to Victor Von Doom.
Dwarf:
Cargill into Black Cat, Blade reinforces.
EA Stall:
Victor Von Doom (+2 Def) attacks Alfred for 9, but Crowd Control is played to reduce damage to 1.
38-29
Turn 6
Draw Pleasant Distraction and Daredevil.
EA Stall:
Place Pleasant Distraction and recruit Daredevil.
NTZ for Crowd Control, plays crowd control in response.
Black Cat into Alfred for 1.
Hawkeye into Joanna Cargill, GPCD reinforces for 3.
Blade into GPCD for 1.
Doom and Daredevil to the face for 21.
12-29
Turn 7
Draw Black Cat, Ego Gem.
Search for Stark’s Protégé with EOME discarding Daredevil.
EA Stall:
Recruit Stark’s Protégé. Play Ego Gem on Black Cat.
Dwarf:
cries and concedes
[Dwarf Note: This deck confused me. It had the beginning makings of a New Brotherhood rush, but no way to replace resources to get those New Brotherhoods into the resource row. Also, Joanna gets -1/-1 for each face-up resource, so flipping Hook-Ups/New Brotherhoods actually hurt me since she's the biggest character in the deck. Sorry if I misplayed this deck, but I just couldn't find the win condition!]
WINNER: EA Stall
Turn 1
Mulligan
Draw Alfred, Birthing Chamber, Cover Fire, Cover Fire, Barbara Gordon
Place Birthing Chamber.
GPCD Stall:
recruit Alfred.
Dwarf no recruit.
[Dwarf Note: I may have had no recruit, but I did pull Black Cat and an Ego Gem in my opening hand. Good times!]
50-50
Turn 2
Draw GPCD and Press the Attack.
Dwarf:
Black Cat and Ego gem…draws a card.
GPCD Stall:
Recruit GPCD, return Alfred to search (I forgot what I searched for)
Recruit Alfred.
Dwarf evades with Black Cat when I pass on Attack. Returned Ego Gem to hand and discard to draw.
48-50
Turn 3
Draw Bat Signal and Birthing Chamber
Place Bat Signal
GPCD Stall:
Tap GPCD for Bat Signal to search for Commish Gordon. Alfred to get Ego Gem. Recruit Gordon. Recruit GPCD and Ego Gem.
Dwarf:
Recruits Ragman w/ Ego Gem.
evades with Black Cat and discarded Black Cat to draw.
GPCD Stall:
GPCD/Ego Gem to draw a card, Ragman chains to ego gem as well. Both draw cards. Draw Fizzle.
46-50
Turn 4
Draw Finishing Move, GPCD
Dwarf recruits Cat Woman with Jet Pack.
GPCD Stall places Birthing Chamber.
Recruit Alfred and GPCD. Flip Birthing Chamber and tap to draw. Draw PTA.
Dwarf:
Black Cat into GPCD, cover fire played, no stun.
Ragman attack GPCD officer, cover fire played, no stun.
Cat Woman into Commish, GPCD reinforces, 2 damage.
Evade with black cat, discarding black cat, to draw a card.
GPCD Stall:
Tap GPCD to draw a card, GPCD officer.
44-48
Turn 5
Draw Commissioner Gordon, PTA
GPCD Stall:
Play GPCD. Tap Birthing Chamber to draw 2 and discard 1. Fizzle and GPCD, discard Commissioner Gordon.
Dwarf HAB’s Birthing Chamber, replaced with GPCD. Flipped other Birthing Chamber, draw GPCD and Birthing Chamber, discarding Birthing Chamber. (Baldman Note: I hope he doesn’t have another HAB…)
GPCD Stall:
Two GPCD team into Ragman, returning Ego Gem to hand, and removing Barbara Gordon from Grafeyard to give +1 counter to Ragman. GPCD and Ragman stun.
Tap GPCD to draw a card with Ego Gem, drawing Barbara Gordon.
PTA GPCD w. Ego gem and tap to draw a card, GPCD officer.
PTA GPCD w. Ego gem and tap to draw a card, Bat Signal.
PTA GPCD w. Ego gem and tap to draw a card, Birthing Chamber.
Black Cat evades, discard Ego Gem and draws.
White Tiger into Alfred, GPCD reinforce, 1endurance loss.
[Baldman Note: I used the PTAs to help me get a Batman. This deck is a lot like FatBat, and without Batman 7 drop, I will lose…If I manage to get Batman, I can exhaust characters to get cards back into my hand.]
40-46
Turn 6
Draw GPCD and Ego Gem.
Dwarf plays HAB, I use Birthing Chamber to draw Finishing Move. (Baldman Note: Good thing I drew that other Birthing Chamber…)
GPCD Stall:
Place Birthing Chamber.
Recruit 3 GPCD, Alfred, use Bat Signal for GPCD and recruit.
[Baldman Note: In hindsight, I should have gotten Batman and just dealt with the under drop.]
Flip Birthing Chamber and draw 2, Alfred and Fizzle and discard Ego Gem.
Dwarf:
Under drops Frank Castle and 3 drop Barbara Gordon ( things start looking bad for me…)
[Dwarf Note: He thinks things are looking bad for him? I just missed my6-drop Batman - the only way to get my 8-drop Superman into play!]
Ragman into exhausted GPCD, stun for 1.
Black Cat into GPCD, reinforce with GPCD, stun for 1.
Frank Castle into GPCD, reinforce with GPCD, stun for 1
White Tiger into GPCD, Cover fire foir +10 def:
Dwarf plays Savage, Baldman plays Fizzle
Dwarf plays Savage, Baldman plays Fizzle
Dwarf plays Savage, exhaust GPCD to play finishing move on own character, giving GPCD reinforcement for being exhausted. GPCD stuns for 1.
[Dwarf Note: Jeebus! That was a lot of pump for 1 stun, but the more officers I can get down, the less powerful the Cover Fires will be...and by now he must have them all.]
Cat Woman into Gordon, play Cover Fire for +8 def, no stun.
[Dwarf Note: See?!]
Barbara Gordon into GPCD exhausted for 1.
GPCD Stall:
Tap GPCD w/ Ego gem to draw, Detective Work.
40-42
Turn 7
Draw Alfred Pennyworth, GPCD.
Place Detective Work.
Birthing Chamber, draw GPCD and Finishing Move, discard Alfred.
GPCD Stall:
4 GPCD and Gordon team attack White Tiger, stun for 5, GPCD stuns for 1.
Finishing Move on White Tiger.
Exhaust GPCD to draw a card, Barbara Gordon.
Cat Woman into Commissioner Gordon, stun and breakthrough for 8, I discard Barbara Gordon, and Dwarf draws 2 for his Barbara Gordon and Cat Woman effects.
Batman attacks Alfred (wtf?) for 1 stun and 11 breakthrough.
[Baldman Note: Oh hamburger… that tickled!]
Punisher, Ragman, Barbara Gordon each attack GPCD officer for 3 stun.
Black Cat Evades, taking 2, dumping Barbara Gordon and drawing a card.
33-22
Turn 8
Draw Superman BB Boy Scout and Commissioner Gordon.
Dwarf:
recruits Big Blue Boyscout. Holy Hamburgers! No Batman in play, so I can’t recruit my BB Boyscout.
Baldman concedes. (I’m not crying, I just got something in my eye…)
[Baldman Notes: This deck needs the 3 or 6 drop Batman or to have 4 7 drop Batman if the deck is going to be based around its use. I think the deck should have the 3 drop Batman for defensive purposes anyways and to ensure that 8 drop Superman can hit the field in the odd situation that you miss a 7 drop Batman. Both 7 drop Batman cards [only 2 in the build] were in the last 10 cards in the deck. But, on a positive note, I ended the game with only 13 cards in deck.]
WINNER: Dwarven Spider-Knights
Next week we will bring you matches 3 and 4:
8. EA INSANITY vs. 5. Avenging Knights
Match 4
7. 10 Paces at Noon vs. 4. Man and Machines
Who will win? Who will lose? And does the Insanity deck stand even the most remote chance of sending Adam and the Avenging knights home in the first round? No, but come back and check out the carnage anyways, and see if the deck you chose to win performed well, or died on the battlefield!
Do you have feedback from something you did that was particularly
fun, or have an idea for a future Baldsday? Then contact me at seanthebaldman@hotmail.com or post a comment. I would love your feedback.
I know it worked out, but I can't believe you mulliganed away Boris, Doom, and Hawkeye when you knew you were playing a GCPD deck.
Nice job guys, looking forward to the next bracket.

The deck description focused on the Black Cat draw engine. I figured that with 3 other Dooms, and 4 EOME, that I should be able to get another one if I could get Black Cat. Obviously, that did not work out. Though I chose not to search on three for Doom to make sure I could get Hawkeye on four since he seemed more important.
The 'one of' plot twists will be more important in future rounds, though I could have used Flame Trap.

With all that draw and search I thought two Batmans were enough.
Why didn't you use the Commissioner's equip-kill power?
Well, at least I betted against my deck.

I didn't care as much about the Dwarf drawing as I did him offing my GPCD officers. If Black Cat draws, she does not attack. I figured it was one more way to keep my little guys around longer.
If I hadn't been so unlucky in my draw, I would have gotten Batman, and it would have worked out just fine. The Dwarf knows how lucky he was I did not have my Batman on 7...=)
